Nataly in Rio

IMG_8601

How does an Olympic soccer player feel about competing in Rio de Janeiro this year? Our marketing intern, Heather, got to pick Nataly’s brain again to find out. This time, she asked Nataly’s opinion about Rio, how she gets along with her teammates and if she’s the only dual citizen on the Colombia team.

HW: Have you ever been to Rio de Janeiro before?

NA: Nope, it will be my first time, which I’m super excited about. It was always on my bucket list to go. It’s just stunning landscape, and culturally very significant. I value the Brazilian culture, especially because Brazil is considered one of the birthplaces of our sport, so it’s always kind of a reference point for a lot of players– the style they play, the freedom with which they play and the technique– so it will be cool just to play on their soil.

HW: What are you most looking forward to about the Olympics in Rio?

NA: Just another opportunity to compete at the highest level. I think that’s the driving force for me a lot of the time. It’s just another opportunity to do something that I’ve always wanted to do and I’ve loved to do since I was four years old. There’s a different sensation when I compete or when I’m on the field, and it’s just a different drive, a different type of personality, almost. So it’s about being able to unleash in a way that I’m not able to on a day-to-day basis, and just kind of push myself to that competitive limit. It’s just more of the competition, and it’s also another opportunity to represent my country, which is the highest honor any athlete has. And to get a chance just to play with my team that’s like my family.

HW: So you’re close to your teammates?

NA: Yeah. I mean, I’m one of the older players, not just in my age but I’m also a veteran of the team. So a lot of them are coming up and getting experience under their belt and need a little bit of a guiding force. I feel like that’s my responsibility a little bit. So yeah, they’re just kind of like my little sisters. Not all of them, some of them are around my age group and we feel like we’re in the same life phases. But as a team we are in some different phases of life so that’s always kind of fun to experience, and also a little challenging.

HW: How often do you see your teammates?

NA: Only for camp and when we’re competing.

HW: Are you the only one on your team who doesn’t live in Colombia?

NA: No, I am one of three, I think. The other two live in Florida, one in West Palm Beach and one in Boca. So they live pretty close to each other and they train together. One of them is a goalkeeper and the other is a defender. For these two tournaments, the World Cup and the Olympics, there are three of us. For the last cycle– the last World Cup and Olympics– I was the only one, the only American and Colombian dual citizen.

Nataly Goes to the Olympics

Nataly Blog 1Our Human Resources Manager and Colombia women’s soccer player, Nataly Arias, is competing in the Olympics this year in Rio de Janeiro! Heather, our marketing intern, got to sit down with Nataly and talk to her about her experience with the Olympics, and how it compares to the World Cup.

H: Will this be your first Olympics?

NA: No it won’t, I competed in the London Olympics in 2012.

H: How was it?

NA: It was…. I hate to sound cliché, because we end up saying kind of the same thing most of the time, but it was an incredible experience. It was what I had always dreamt of as a kid; getting to meet so many people from other parts of the world and different walks of life, other disciples, other sports and seeing how they train. It’s just a very humbling experience and it fills you with a lot of gratitude and appreciation for what you’ve accomplished. It’s also kind of like the most exclusive club in the world, because not many people reach that pinnacle of their discipline or of their sport.

H: How many World Cups have you competed in?

NA: Two. The World Cup in 2011 in Germany, and then the last one in 2015 in Canada.

H: You competed in the World Cup last year. How does the World Cup compare to the Olympics?

NA: I grew up, in the purest sense, just a diehard football fan. I loved South American and European soccer. Obviously, when I was a kid the MLS (Major League Soccer) launched, but I was about eight or nine, so those early, early years were about watching abroad. The World Cup was always the pinnacle for me, and as a girl I always thought “I’m gonna do that.” Even though there wasn’t a platform– well there was, but it was much smaller at the time– I was convinced. I thought, “well then, I’ll make a boys’ team.” I wanted to figure out a way to play in a World Cup because to me, the World Cup was the pinnacle.

The World Cup is a little bit higher for me just because for our sport, it’s the top. But the Olympics is the Olympics. I mean, for other sports it is the only thing that these people train for– years and years of their lives for 10 seconds. I grew up a fan of other sports; I loved watching the Olympics, especially the track and field events and the gymnastics– things that I didn’t play. The 1996 Olympics was a huge moment for me, which is really cool that it was in Atlanta. I didn’t get to attend, but I just remember it being really engrained in my head– particularly the opening ceremonies and Muhammad Ali. That was the first time women’s soccer was in an Olympics, and that team’s poster–for the U.S. women– was in my room for many years. I thought, “One day I’m going to compete in the Olympic games.” It was something else introduced into the women’s football platform: first the World Cup, then you could also compete in an Olympics, then you could compete in Pan American games and now you can do all these Olympic-style events and get a medal. Growing up, I didn’t think that was an option. It wasn’t at the time. But when it became one it was like, “Everyone works their entire lives to get a medal; I want one, too.”

We’ll be checking in with Nataly periodically to see what she’s looking forward to most about going to Rio, what her training schedule will be like, and which teams she’s most excited to compete against. Make sure to follow us on social media to keep up with her story! And check out our interview with her last year, before the World Cup, here.

How Does Personality Affect Leadership Style?

personalityblog

There are many different types of personality. Personality affects how people think, feel and act in every situation, especially in the workplace. So does personality type determine your effectiveness as a leader? Is there one best personality type that makes a good leader?

The answer is: it depends on the job. Just like every personality is different, every position is different as well. The required tasks, chain of command, hours and atmosphere affect which personality types are going to be most successful in a position. While personality shouldn’t be a make or break factor in the workplace, it can be useful to take into account if you are applying for a new job, or if you are in charge of hiring for an open position. Knowing your personality type can tell you some of your strengths and weaknesses, and give you areas to focus on to be your most successful self.

You may have heard of some different ways to determine your personality type, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Jung Typology Theory or the Keirsey Temperament Sorter. While these tests contain some differences– and may not be completely accurate– the fundamentals for the different personality types are very similar. Each of these tests determines a four-letter code that relates to four different two-factor categories. These categories can be broken down into Introvert/Extrovert, Intuitive/Sensing, Thinking/Feeling and Judging/Perceiving. Therefore someone with an INFJ personality type would be an Introvert/Intuitive/Feeling/Judging combination.

So what how do these personality types affect leadership style?

Extraverts can be very effective leaders. They are naturally charismatic and can command a room. However, sometimes a big personality doesn’t allow for others to voice different ideas and opinions. In order to be effective, extroverted leaders need to dial down their intensity and make sure there is room for others to give input and feel valued. On the other hand, introverts may struggle being the center of attention and directing others, however they are often good at stepping back to let others shine. This can improve employee morale and lead to loyal and motivated workers.

A person with the sensing personality type relies on past experiences and his or her senses to make decisions. While they often have experiences to back up their decisions, they might miss opportunities by failing to think things through. They tend to be very detail oriented and analytical, but they may miss the bigger picture by focusing only on what is in front of them. On the other hand, intuitive people focus mostly on the meanings and patterns in the information they receive. They tend to think about all the possibilities and theories before making a decision. However, because of this they tend to focus on the future and may have trouble finalizing decisions and seeing what needs to be done in the present.

Someone with a thinking personality tends to be rational and reasonable, making the most logical choice in a decision regardless of personal consequences. This is a beneficial leadership trait in hard decisions, however it might not be the most tactful where other peoples’ feelings are involved. A feeling personality considers how others will feel and react to decisions, but they need to be careful not to act too leniently in certain situations just because they are afraid of hurting feelings.

The leader with a judging personality is most likely very organized and structured. They schedule meticulously and keep order in their work lives. This can be an effective way of getting tasks done with the most efficiency, however their rigid procedures could prevent them from being open to other opportunities. The perceiving personality tends to be more open to new ideas and opinions because they keep a more flexible and open schedule. They act more spontaneously and can implement ideas on the fly. However, they tend to be less organized and employees may struggle with their lack of planning.

Any personality type can be successful in a leadership role. The most important thing to keep in mind is that everyone has some strengths and some weaknesses, and balance is the key to success. Realizing your personality type and the personality type of those you work with will help strengthen work relationships and create new opportunities.
